About Advanced Technology Laboratories

The Advanced Technology Laboratories (ATL) is on the front lines of Lockheed Martin’s applied research and development efforts. Aligned with the Corporation’s Chief Technology Officer, we work to advance scientific discovery and technology transition in cyber, materials science, robotics and autonomy, spectrum systems, data analytics and more.

We embrace diversity of thought, collaborating with some of the best and brightest in government, industry and academia. Our primary research partners include the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), U.S. government service laboratories, universities, and Lockheed Martin colleagues at The Skunk Works®, the Advanced Technology Center and more.

We look far into the future—envisioning transformational technologies that will redefine global security. And while we don’t know exactly what will change the world next, we’re probably already working on it.

Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Laboratories has operated on the frontline of applied research and development for close to a century. Our origins date back to 1929, when a group of GE engineers joined RCA to develop television technology and work on recording sound for motion picture films. Known later as the Advanced Development group, this formed the nucleus of today's Advanced Technology Laboratories.
Our legacy includes pioneering the fundamentals of television in the 1930s and 1940s…to creating recording and laser technologies for America’s space program in the 1950s and 1960s…to advancing speech recognition and bar code scanning in the 1970s and 1980s…to enabling human-computer dialogue and unmanned systems in the 1990s and 2000s.
